When will tickets to see the Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum go on sale? Well, we finally have an answer. Ticket booking for the “once-in-a-lifetime” Bayeux Tapestry exhibition will open on 01 July 2026.

The hotly anticipated loan of the medieval tapestry to England for the first time in 1,000 years is expected to draw over a million people, which means it's likely to break attendance records for British Museum exhibitions. The iconic 70m-long artwork will go on display at the British Museum in September 2026 and will run until July 2027.

The date that tickets will go on sale was itself revealed with the fanfare. The announcement that 01 July is the big on-sale day was made with a special takeover of the famous advertising screens of London’s Piccadilly Circus. It was unveiled by British Museum Director Nicholas Cullinan and Chair of Trustees, George Osborne, who were joined by the French Ambassador, Her Excellency Madame Hélène Duchêne.

British Museum members get Bayeux Tapestry early access

Tickets to see the Bayeux Tapestry will be released in three stages.

On 01 July the public can book tickets for dates between September and December 2026. Two more ticket drops will happen in October and January, for access between January and March and April and July 2027.

What we don’t know yet, is how much tickets will cost. But whatever the price, it’s expected there will be Glastonbury-levels of demand.

But there is a way to nab Tapestry tickets before everyone else.

Because British Museum members will actually get early, priority booking from June. That's potentially one month in advance.

And museum patrons will get them even earlier. Those in the museum’s three Patrons Circle — who donate £3,500 to £12,000 a year to the museum to join these ranks — will have tickets available to them from May.

The British Museum’s Chair of Trustees George Osborne marked the reveal of the on-sale date by saying that the Tapestry’s stay in London will result in “the biggest year in the Museum's history.” He added that “we expect 7.5 million people to visit."

Dr Nicholas Cullinan OBE, the Director of the British Museum, said “it's difficult to capture just how extraordinary the opportunity to display the tapestry in the UK for the first time in 1000 years is.

“I'm glad we'll now all be able to share in that excitement as people book their tickets and travel to London to take part in what is undoubtedly going to be one of the biggest cultural events the British Museum has hosted.”
